1. Kathleen Reily talks about some of the activites of the Americann Association of Universtiy Women (AAUW) in Sonoma County, especially advocating for Equal Pay for women as is paid men for the same job.  AAUW holds an annual ‘Unequal Cookie Sale’ on Equal Pay Day every year to bring awareness to gender pay gap at the different city chapters of AAUW in the nation.  The next Equal Pay Day, according to the National Committee on Pay Equity, is Tuesday, April 10, 2018. This date symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. In 2016 it was on April 12th, so there has been a bit of an improvement.

Amanda Morrison, PhD, Coordinator of Our House Intercultural Center on the Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) Petaluma’s campus shares her path to interculturalism, that of cultures mixing and interacting with one another.  Amanda islead organizer in the second annual We the Future Social Justice Conference co-sponsored with the North Bay Organizing Project on April 13, 2018, calling this year' theme Feeding Ourselves, Feeding Our Souls, to gather activists to network.  The keynote speaker will be Nikki Silvestri,who was named one of the 100 Most Influential African Americans by The Root magazine.

About Our Guest: Amanda Morrison is a California native and Sonoma County local. . Although she spent her childhood in a hippie enclave in Los Angeles called Topanga Canyon, she attended high school at Santa Rosa High and considers this area home. Amanda taught ethnic studies for over four years at Sonoma State University as well as cultural anthropology at UC Berkeley. She holds a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin with a specialization in Mexican-American studies and popular culture. Her dissertation focused on the Bay Area hip-hop scene; if you want to call her a “hip-hop scholar” she’s cool with that. She chose that topic because she’s interested in cultural forms that bridge differences and bring people together across racial and ethnic lines. Her vision is to cultivate that kind of space in Our House. Given her mixed Chicano/a and Anglo/a heritage, she sees herself as a bridge figure and community builder.

 April is Sexual Violence Awareness Month

April is a month dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence and increasing the public’s understanding about sexual violence in our society. It also provides opportunities for the community to be directly involved in supporting victims and survivors, their families, and organizations that provide crisis intervention throughout the year. Sexual violence prevention requires many voices and roles. Prevention is possible and we all can make a difference. Here’s how YOU can make a difference, as we learned at the Panel Discussion after the Special Screening of the Film The Rape of Recy Taylor on March 29 last week at the Rialto Cinema in Sebastopol:
Intervene to stop concerning behavior
Speak up when you hear rape jokes or harmful comments
Believe and support survivors
Create prevention policies at your workplace or school
Coordinate a community event to raise awareness
Talk with neighbors about ways everyone can get involved
Email legislators to gain support for prevention and services
Support the agencies who provide services for survivors: DONATE
