Before Deciding

When our representatives are making important decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask one basic question before making
those decisions,
Is this good for
the children?

Just imagine what our world would be like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz After the usual Announcements and this week in Herstory, Elaine introduces her guest.

Joining me on the phone from her office in Los Angeles is Women’s Rights attorney, Gloria Allred, and we will be talking about her career and importance of Women’s Rights and the contribution she has made. Today we will be talking about the reversal of Roe vs Wade, which gave women the constitutional right to make choices over their own bodies, a fundamental freedom.
In a guest column for Variety she wrote on June 29, 2022, A Womb with a view, Gloria Allred writes, “From the bottom of my heart and my womb, I urge you to join me in fighting for justice for women. I am no longer a good girl; I am now a fearless womb warrior.” The link to the article is under Guest Links below.

Elaine read her poem Journey With Me after the interview with Gloria Allred.Click on the poem title to be directed to it below.

2. Our guest Gloria Allred shares an intimate story of herGloria Allred past, that she also published in Variety, of being raped in 1960, discovering she was pregnant, and after a back street abortion was performed by a man who was not medically trained, she almost bled to death. No other options were available at the time. It would be the spark that fueled her passion to help Women defend their rights, including representing Jane Roe before the U.S. Supreme Court in the case Roe v. Wade in 1973. When asked Gloria said she doubted whether it would have made any difference if, as Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg opined, "it would have been better to approach it under the equal protection clause." Our host Elaine then questioned if the three Justices appointed by President Trump could be impeached for lying during the confirmation hearing on their support for Roe v Wade as precedent, and again Gloria did not think this would be a fruitful route for women's rights. Gloria said the reversal would make it more difficult for women to take advantage of business opportunities and jobs, affect them financially and in every aspect of life. She warns that the right to birth control and LGBTQ+ rights are next according to Justice Clarence Thomas. After this reversal by the Supreme Court, Gloria encourages women to, of course, protest that they legally have become 2nd class citizens again, as well as plan for ways to help women seek abortions in the free states, but more importantly run for office, and for all of us to vote for those candidates pledging support of Women's Rights.

About our Guest: Gloria Allred was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She earned her B.A. with honors in English from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her M.A. from New York University and her J.D. cum laude from Loyola University School of Law in Los Angeles. She was also awarded an honorary J.D. from the University of West Los Angeles School of Law.
Ms. Allred is a founding partner of the law firm Allred, Maroko & Goldberg(AM&G). Her firm handles more women's rights cases than any other private firm in the nation and has won hundreds of millions of dollars for victims. Ms. Allred also founded the Women's Equal Rights Legal Defense and Education Fund (WERLDEF).
in 2017 Netflix announced "Seeing Allred" an original documentary about Ms. Allred and her battles for justice which launched globally on Netflix in February 2018 after its world premiere in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.
In addition to being an attorney, Ms. Allred holds California life credentials in secondary school education and supervision. She taught in public schools for six½ years and was a lecturer at the University of Southern California for several years.
Ms. Allred is the author of "Fight Back and Win: My Thirty-Year Fight Against Injustice — And How You Can Win Your Own Battles In 2018 – Gloria was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Organization for Women (NOW) for her enduring commitment to fighting injustices against women. And in 2019 she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Please note these are only two of many awards and recognitions.
