Before Deciding

When our representatives are making important decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask one basic question before making
those decisions,
Is this good for
the children?

Just imagine what our world would be like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Amber Szoboszlai and 2. Zahyra Garcia talk about the LBGTQI community in Sonoma County and their struggles to be accepted as identities other than just male and female, also known as non-binary identities.  They share their personal journey to becoming activists in this community, in their professions, in their education and in their work supporting families with non-binary members and parents through North Bay LGBTQI Families. Zahra draws our attention to the California FAIR Education Act, championed by State Senator Jay Leno and signed into law in 2011 to mandate "Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful reference to contributions by people with disabilities and members of the LGBT community in history and social studies curriculum."

About our Guest:  Amber Szoboszlai is a community activist and organizer who works to empower people in Petaluma who are impacted by injustice. She is co-chair of the North Bay Organizing Project Petaluma chapter. Professionally, she is a trained scientist who harnesses the power of big data to improve fisheries management in the Pacific Ocean. She has the methodical thinking of a scientist and the spirit of an organizer. She’s queer, she loves spreadsheets, and she can be seen riding her bike around town.

Guest Link:  www.500queerscientists.com  "A new visibility campaign for LGBTQ+ people and their allies working in STEM* and STEM-supporting jobs — a group that collectively represents a powerful force of scientific progress and discovery."

*STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)

About our Guest: Zahyra Garcia is Co-chair to Indivisible Petaluma and Co-chair of the Petaluma Chapter of the North Bay Organizing Project.  Zahyra is part of the core group of parents who formed North Bay LGBTQI Families, a fiscally sponsored project of Our Family Coaltion, an organization representing and advocating for Sonoma County’s LGBTQI parent-led families and their children. Her work with North Bay LGBTQI Families is as a community organizer, activist and vital support for the group’s annual events: the Family Formation Symposium, the Family Pride Campout, and the LGBTQI Family Contingent in the Sonoma County Pride Parade. Zahyra focuses on intersectionality within the Sonoma County LGBTQI Family community and is dedicated to raising awareness of queer families and their unique needs in rural Sonoma County. Zahrya is a mother of a boy and a girl.

3. Ronda Black gives a short update to the production of the event One Billion Rising (OBR) and The Vagina Monologues (TVM) in Petaluma on Valentine's Day February 14th. Volunteers are still needed for this fun and inspiring annual event.

About our Guest: Rhonda Black refers to herself as a local do gooder, who believes that mentoring and working towards ending violence against women and children is the best way to change our world for the better. She has been involved with The Vagina Monologue (TVM) for ten years and One Billion Rising (OBR) since its beginning in 2012. She’s helped with marches, taught Flash mobs, art shows, organized OBR’s and TVM over the years. This year she is producing and directing The Vagina Monologues in Petaluma. Through the program Mentor Me she has mentored one young boy for six years and two sets of four teenage women who are part of the Commission on the Status of Women Junior Commission. She has a passion for the arts, activism and strengthening community through mentoring.
