1. Laura Lopez Ledesma shares her story as an immigrant child who, in spite of legal challenges facing her parents and herself, was determined to excel and  achieved her law degree. She talks of the benefits the community at large have enjoyed with undocumented persons living and working in the county.  Laura is now helping other immigrants through the Volunteer Immigrant Defense Action Committee (Comité VIDA), whose mission is To educate and mobilize residents of Sonoma County about legal and social justice issues affecting the lives of immigrants and our entire community for positive action.  Laura describes some steps local residents can take regarding obtaining the matrícula consular, an identity card that Mexican consulates issue to Mexican citizens who reside outside Mexico. Laura talks of the support and networking  Comité VIDA provides, as well as legal assistance through Vital Immigrant Defense Advocacy and Services (VIDAS Legal) sharing their office. She also encourages citizens to make use of the Rapid Response Network hotline (707) 800-4544 if ICE activity is seen.

About our Guest:   Laura Lopez Ledesma is Associate Director at VIDAS Legal Services, and she’s newly accredited under the Department of Justice, allowing her to represent immigrants in affirmative applications and deportation proceedings. She has been an immigration rights advocate for 13 years and is a DACA beneficiary. She arrived from Mexico with her mother and was raised in Napa, CA. She has a Bachelor’s from UC Santa Cruz and law degree from Penn State University. She is the mother of a beautiful, happy, 7-month old boy named Kuali, whose name in Nahuatl means “Good,” as he represents the good in our lives.

August 6, 1965 – The Voting Rights Act outlaws the discriminatory literacy tests that had been used to prevent African Americans from voting. Suffrage is finally fully extended to African American women.

 August 8, 1969 – Executive order 11478 issued by President Nixon requires each federal department and agency to establish and maintain an affirmative action program of equal employment opportunity for civilian employees and applicants.

August 9, 1995 – Roberta Cooper Ramo becomes the first woman to hold the office of president of the American Bar Association

August 10, 1993 – Ruth Bader Ginsburg is sworn in as the second woman.
