Before Deciding

When our representatives are making important decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask one basic question before making
those decisions,
Is this good for
the children?

Just imagine what our world would be like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz Amidst the outbreak of a new war over the Ukraine we are featuring an interview with the director of the musical Hair now playing at the Sixth Street Playhouse in Santa Rosa. It seems like Deja vu. Ken remembers seeing Hair the first time with a draft card in his wallet as the Vietnam war waged and student protests escalated. "Where is the sunshine?". Elaine reads a quotation of Octavia Butler on choosing leaders, which can be read in the Herstory section below.

2 Our first guest, Aja Gianola-Norris, is the Director of the musical Hair at the 6th Street Playhouse. Hair was first on stage in 1967 at the height of the Vietnam War and the ensuing anti-war protests and flower children questioning authority. Aja was picked as director after good reviews of her productions as a schoolteacher. Aja is also an accomplished harpist, playing in local symphonies. She was able to weave in newer issues like transgenderism, as one of the actors was undergoing the biological transformation. Hair the musical will be playing through March 6th and Aja says that there were still some tickets available. So, put a flower in your hair and wear your best paisleys and bell-bottoms for a hip experience of Hair.

About our Guest: Aja Gianola-Norris is a native California began in the fourth grade when she began playing the piano and then discovering the harp in the 10th grade.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cal State East Bay where I majored in Voice and Harp. She appeared on TLC’s Wedding Story in 2002 as a solo harpist and have been fortunate enough to be a part of hundreds of private weddings and parties since 2001.
She has performed with many Bay Area orchestras, including California Symphony, Berkeley Opera, Santa Rosa Symphony, Modesto Symphony, and Ukiah Symphony. At present she is the director of the musical, “Hair,” now playing until March 6 at 6th St. Playhouse in Santa Rosa. She has two inspiring children and a wonderful husband.

3 Our second guest, Katrina Phillips, shares her life, beginning as a bi-racial child of a Special Forces medic that experienced many different countries and cultures before the age of 13. Katrina also is a lesbian, which made her even more aware of human rights.  She became an actor, appearing in the films Cheerleader and Stanger inside. She has been on the Sonoma County Commission for Human Rights (SCCHR) for two years and was recently named President of the Commission. The mission of SCCHR is to be a liaison between the Board of Supervisors and Human Rights. Through the ad hoc committees and county residents contacting the commission, SCCHR learns of human rights abuses. A website has been set up for anonymous reporting of abuses at https://socohrvp.org/ . Applications for the Junior Commission are being accepted through May 2, 2022  at the SCCHR website. The candidates for Sheriff of the county will appear in a forum sponsored by SCCHR in April.

About our Guest: Katrina Phillips moved to Santa Rosa 10 years ago from Los Angeles where she was an actor and also worked as a counselor for at risk youth. She has been a volunteer with Fire Pet Rescue and Reunification since the Tubbs Fire, a member of the Sonoma County Human Trafficking Task Force and is currently the Chair of the Commission on Human Rights.
