Before Deciding

When our representatives are making important decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask one basic question before making
those decisions,
Is this good for
the children?

Just imagine what our world would be like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Our first guest Regina Brennan talks about the Sonoma County Black Forum, that was founded after the presidential election of 2016, as a way for Blacks in the county to meet and discuss strategies going forward to deal with the racial animosity and policies encouraged by the rhetoric of the incoming Trump Administration after Barack Obama, the first black man elected as President, left office. At the initial meeting they felt the urgency to address the critical needs in our community. Present were artists, community organizers, educators, and entrepreneurs of Sonoma County as well as representatives from 100 Black Men, NAACP, and the Black Chamber of Commerce. A few weeks later, a small group continued to meet, and by late spring of 2017, the Sonoma County Black Forum (SCBF) was founded. They formed a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation with an initial board of 7 people with the vision to support area youth and community by creating opportunities to support education, provide access to arts, culture and technology in order to foster agency within Sonoma County and the surrounding Bay Area. Working with their community partners, they mean to develop and expand the Black experience, and contribute to the culture of our Sonoma community. In 2020 with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Black Forum began to focus on helping the less fortunate in the community with Food Distribution. Regina announced the next Food Distribution will be happening on January 22. Regina announced the next Food Distribution will be happening on January 22. 2. Our second guest Tina Rogers shares with what the line-up is for the Martin Luther King jr. Birthday Celebration this year on Sunday January 16, 2022 from 7 to 9 PM as an online event. This year, The Sonoma County MLK Birthday Committee applauds the King family’s admonition to remember the deepest meaning of his lifelong work – to not just celebrate his birthday and “dream” of a more just future, but to build and sustain his vision of equity and to secure everyone’s right to vote. Tina explains where the motto is derived for this year's theme, a quote of Martin Luther King jr. from his speech in Washington DC, "Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope." Donzaleigh Abernathy, the daughter of Rev. Ralph Abernathy, will return this year as a guest speaker speaking from her direct experience of MLK. Youth from county elementary and high schools will present their poster art. All are welcome to attend the online event. See the details below on the poster under Guest Events. The video of the event can be seen by clicking this LINK.

-  report by Ken Norton, Co-Producer, Women's Spaces

About our Guest: Tina Rogers is a native of Sonoma County and has devoted her life in trying to understand this beautiful planet, the humans and the other species that share our world. A true humanitarian is what she represents, thorough research, education, and communication with other cultures allows her to see the "big picture." While attending UC Davis, she turned her passion for the arts, fitness, and wellness into a popular example of master teaching not only to children but people of all ages. Tina is a role model who enjoys using arts education and fitness, as tools to “crack-the-code” in child development that lasts a lifetime. She is also a member of the MLK Planning Committee since 2018.
