1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:  This is the last Monday of the month,  and we will be doing, “The “Women’s Spaces Pledge.”

I attended the Women in Conversation event, “Call for Climate Action,” and was thrilled to hear from Winona La Duke and Jamie Margolin. On last week's show we interviewed the producer of the event, Karleen Arnink-Pate. 40 years separate them in age but Climate Change has affected them both to be so concern to become active in their youth, Batons seem to be passing from the old to the new, as you will be hearing through our guests today, one a witness to the first Earth Day and its precursor by 2 months the Survival Faire, and two as youth active in the Sunrise Movement.

Friday April 22 was Earth Day. Earth Day honors Rachel Carson, a woman who changed America and influenced the environmental movement with her revolutionary book, Silent Spring. Silent Spring is an environmental science book by Rachel Carson. The book was published on September 27, 1962, documenting the adverse environmental effects caused by the indiscriminate use of pesticides. The theme for Earth Day 2022 is, “Invest in Our Planet.”

2.  Our co-producer, Ken Norton shares how he participated as a 22-year-old undergraduate student in the Survival Faire at San Jose State College in February 1970, at which a new car was buried to draw attention to the environment and over population. The automobile was an icon for Americans at the time, so its burying had quite a deep impact. Rachel Carlson's book Silent Spring and Paul Ehrlich's book Population Bomb were on the participants' mind. The event drew the attention of the New York Times and was a precursor to the first annual Earth Day by two months. Over 50 years have passed and now the youth have become conscious of the Climate Change at the high school level.

About our Interviewee:  Ken Norton Is co-producer of Women's Spaces. He has earned his BS in Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) from San Jose State University, where he had started Engineers for Awareness club to discuss the environmental and war issues at the time, and MS in MSE from Stanford University. Ken collaborated with his mentor William Hermanns (PhD, Prof.em.) in the editing and publishing of Hermanns' English and German books and poetry from 1970 until his death in 1990. He set up a website in his mentor's honor at www.williamhermanns.com . Ken has recently broadcast over radio a series of 5-minute vignettes called the Scent of Light, which are archived. He lives with his partner Elaine B. Holtz in Santa Rosa.

3. Our guests, Amy Cohen and Rachel Cohen, are twins attending West County High School and co-hub coordinators of the youth-led Sunrise Movement in Sonoma County. They both share what caused them to become active for Climate Justice. The wildfire destruction of thousands of homes in Sonoma County in 2017, and the years succeeding with more drought and wildfires, together with the Climate Change denial from the former Whitehouse administration, galvanized their resolve to become part of the Sunrise Movement and help plan the actions to educate the public. Amy states that the youth are not bound by political feasibility as they express their needs for an equitable and just path to Climate correction. Rachel feels we have the opportunity for radical change like switching to 100% renewable energy, as we are all affected, as the wildfires across the country and globe have demonstrated. Both Rachel and Amy encourage the creation of green jobs and a California version of the Green New Deal, as well as upgrading the public transit to help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions, of which automobiles account for 60%.

About our guest: Amy Cohen (they/she) is a junior at West County High School and the other co-hub coordinator of Sunrise Sonoma County. They have been involved with the Sunrise Movement for approximately two years, and, along with their twin sister Rachel, have helped to plan several actions in the Bay Area calling for a bold Civilian Climate Corps. They have also been a junior commissioner on the Junior Commission on the Status of Women.

About our guest: Rachel Cohen is a junior at West County high school in Sebastopol and runs a local activist group, Sunrise Sonoma County, with her twin, Amy. Having been in Sunrise since the start of Covid, when a combination of spare time, fear around fires, and a persistent sister pushed her to pursue activism, she has gained skills by filling a variety of needed positions in the hub, her favorite being a trainer. Rachel has organized several actions in the Bay Area to pressure elected officials to support bold and equitable climate action, including a 266-mile march from Paradise to San Francisco focused on winning a progressive Civilian Climate Corps and multiple rallies outside the offices of elected officials.
