Before Deciding

When our representatives are making important decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask one basic question before making
those decisions,
Is this good for
the children?

Just imagine what our world would be like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz I have a special guest with me this morning, joining me on the phone will be Sherry Glaser is author and star of several epic one-woman and is founder of the peace activist group “Breasts Not Bombs” and has been a champion of wimin's rights for decades.

Today we are going to talk about her career and her latest book she wrote with Kym Trippsmith, Mama’s First Pocket Chicktionary, Taking the Dick out of Dictionary, Sherry is also a Tarot Reader and will be picking a card for August whenWomen are celebrating 102 years since we got the vote. Many are concerned that we are going backwards not forward and I will ask Sherry to pick a Tarot Card that might give us some insight.

----

2. Our guest Sherry Glaser shares her early life in New York, exposed to comedy withing the family and the TV shows of Lucille Ball and other wimmin* comics.  She learned acting in college plays. Her first comedy group was called "Hot Flashes." When asked where she got her confidence, she responded that she was not confident as before every show she was in panic before stepping out on the stage, and that took courage. Her play "Oh My Goddess!" came with the realization that the major religions have a God the Father, and she wanted to bring the feminist perspective. The new book Mamas' First Pocket Chictionary - Taking the Dick out of Dictionary started to take shape when she moved into Kym Trippsmith's home due to unforeseen circumstances, which turned into a blessing as their two creative minds sought for a solution to the patriarchy coming through in the English language. Words affirmed male dominance. Sherry and Kym wanted to break the spell through "casting new spells" of the words. Sherry noted that words denoting the feminine often included male syllables, and that the feminine was practically missing in the vocabulary.  Even "Miss" as a courtesy title of a young or single wumun brings up "nothing there" or "failure to connect", which the Chicktionary changes to Myth. First the new spellings seem comical, but they are comic in way that enlightens one to the pervasiveness of Dick in the Dictionary. The is a show you must listen to, as Sherry is very entertaining, and you will probably note more words that could be changed with the wumun spell. Hur and Kym's new book can be purchased at Barnes and Noble or through their website pocketchicktionary.com . Sherry concludes the interview with a tarot card Queen of Rods picked at Elaine's call and read by Sherry.

* Chicktionary spelling in italics

Tarot Reading by Sherry Glaser: The Queen of Rods is the power of fire, energy, movement, in Leo. Today is Lughnasadh, the Harvest Festival of Summer, so an auspicious time for great symbolism.
The Queen is all powerful and uses her power to uplift, teach, protect, guide and bare witness.
As we watch the Patriarchy Fall we must tap into our strength, kindness, tenderness, compassion and love to midwife the new paradigm to the feminine.
A good Mantra for the Queen of Rods is: MY WILL BE DONE.

About our Guest: Sherry Glaser is author, playwrite and star of epic one-woman shows: Family Secrets, Taking the High Road, and Oh My Goddess! She is founder of the peace activist group “Breasts not Bombs” and has been a champion of wimin's rites for decades. She is author of her memoir Family Secrets, and a collaboration with her mother The First Practical Handbook for Crazy People as well as being featured in 5 anthologies. She lives on the
Mendocino Coast with her Wolfy dog Xena and reads Tarot for clients in person or on Zoom.

Herstory Events:

August 6, 1965 – The Voting Rights Act outlaws the discriminatory literacy tests that had been used to prevent African Americans from voting. Suffrage is finally fully extended to African American women.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is a landmark piece of federal legislation in the United States that prohibits racial discrimination in voting.[7][8] It was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson during the height of the civil rights movement on August 6, 1965, and Congress later amended the Act five times to expand its protections.
Designed to enforce the voting rights guaranteed by the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution, the Act sought to secure the right to vote for racial minorities throughout the country, especially in the South.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the Act is considered to be the most effective piece of federal civil rights legislation ever enacted in the country.[9] It is also "one of the most far-reaching pieces of civil rights legislation in U.S. history.   Source: Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_Rights_Act_of_1965

August 3, 1905 (1995) – Maggie Kuhn, senior rights activist, founded the Gray Panthers.

The Gray Panthers are a series of multi-generational local advocacy networks in the United States which confront ageism and many other social justice issues. The organization was formed by Maggie Kuhn in response to her forced retirement from the Presbyterian Church at the age of 65 in 1970. The Gray Panthers are named in reference to the Black Panthers.  Source: Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_Panthers

National Organization for Women (NOW) - Sonoma County Chapter logoMonday August 15, 2022, 7 to 8:30 PM, via Zoom, Monthly meeting of the National Organization for Women (NOW) Sonoma County Chapter.  For details and zoom info see http://nowsonoma.org/Events.html .
To celebrate the 102nd Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote, NOW will have a special guest presentation by Molly Murphy McGregor, one of the co-founders of the National Women’s History Alliance which happened right here in Sonoma County. The Alliance aka the National Women’s History Project founded In 1980, in Santa Rosa, California by Molly Murphy MacGregor, Mary Ruthsdotter, Maria Cuevas, Paula Hammett, and Bette Morgan to broadcast women’s historical achievements. Prior to this event there was a limited amount of Women’s History. Molly MacGregor will be a guest on Women's Spaces on the 22nd of August,

The 19th amendment, which was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920. legally guarantees American women the right to vote. Achieving this milestone required a lengthy and difficult struggle—victory took decades of agitation and protest. Beginning in the mid-19th century, several generations of woman suffrage supporters lectured, wrote, marched, lobbied, and practiced civil disobedience to achieve what many Americans considered a radical change of the Constitution. Few early supporters lived to see final victory in 1920.
