When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by
our Host, Elaine B. Holtz:
On this episode of Women’s
Spaces, host Elaine B. Holtz
welcomes her longtime friend
Nikki Dohn, an artist and
longtime advocate for the rights
of women and children. Elaine
also begins the show with a
heartfelt birthday tribute to
her daughter Susan Jensen,
describing her as a beloved
daughter, mother, grandmother,
and personal inspiration.
Elaine announces a series of
upcoming nonviolent protest
events organized by Community
United to Resist Fascism (CURF),
taking place in Santa Rosa from
May 1 to May 5. These actions
respond to a wave of executive
orders under the current
administration that are viewed
by organizers as
unconstitutional and harmful to
basic civil rights. Although a
CURF organizer was scheduled to
join the broadcast, technical
issues delayed their appearance
until next week’s show. Nikki
Dohn, who participated in the
April 5 and 19 protests, shares
her support for the upcoming
events and the need for civic
engagement.
The May 1 protest aligns with
International Labor Day and will
be one of 600 marches across the
U.S., focusing on labor and
immigrant rights, rooted in
constitutional protections under
the 4th and 5th Amendments. The
march begins at 3 PM at the
Sonoma County Sheriff's Office
and proceeds to downtown Santa
Rosa.
Other scheduled events include a
Veterans’ Rally on Friday, May 2
at the VA Clinic in Santa Rosa,
responding to severe VA staff
and budget cuts.
Saturday, May 3 features an
all-day Critical Mass March and
Rally, culminating in a Free
Speech gathering at Juilliard
Park.
Sunday, May 4 hosts a weekly
Palestine Solidarity event at
Old Courthouse Square.
Monday, May 5 concludes with
Cinco de Mayo activities, though
concerns over ICE enforcement
linger. For full details,
listeners are directed to the
Peace & Justice Center and the
show’s website.
For our music break I chose
Lubiana's song Farafina Mousso

In her Women’s Spaces interview
with Elaine B. Holtz, activist
Nikki Dohn shares her rich and
unconventional life journey,
including work on shrimp boats,
redwood tree crews, and careers
in real estate, astrology, and
administration. She reflects on
past relationships, embracing
independence from a young age
and later finding love again.
Nikki credits her boldness to
her Aries spirit and a deep
belief in the universe’s
movement toward love and
evolution, inspired by Eastern
philosophies like those of
Paramahansa Yogananda.
The conversation explores the
intersection of personal healing
and political activism. Nikki
and Elaine stress the maternal
responsibility to protect both
future generations and the
planet. They discuss the urgency
of civic engagement,
highlighting recent protests by
Community United to Resist
Fascism (CURF). Nikki warns
against voter apathy and
suppression, especially
affecting women and marginalized
groups, and urges everyday
action—calling representatives,
attending rallies, and
connecting with neighbors—as
ways to combat fear and create
change.
Astrologically, Nikki describes
a time of transformation, where
societal upheaval offers
opportunities for renewal. She
and Elaine agree that collective
action—not political
saviors—will drive meaningful
progress. Empathy, especially
imagining how we'd respond if an
issue affected our own children,
is presented as a moral guide.
Nikki offers three guiding daily
reflections: “What can I do to
affect change?”, “How can I help
someone today?”, and “Can I love
each person as I would a newborn
child?” She also shares personal
practices—like spending time in
nature and listening to
music—that help her stay
grounded.
Elaine closes with encouragement
for all to engage however they
can, reminding listeners of
their inner strength and the
importance of unity. Nikki
affirms her commitment to quiet
community work and setting a
hopeful example for her
granddaughters.
About our Guest:
Nikki Dohn's bio is
framed in the context of our
times with broad brushstrokes
painting her 73 years on the
planet. Nikki’s diverse
experiences derive from an
insatiable curiosity and a quest
to see truth, justice, peace,
human rights, sustainability,
and love manifest for all
humankind. This large order has
demanded variety in terms of
jobs and careers in fully,
twenty very different fields,
five collegiate majors, three
ethnically diverse marriages,
plus wide-ranging explorations
in alternative emotional,
spiritual, and physical healing
and wisdom. Advocacy for the
rights of women and children has
guided her at every turn,
beginning at the age of three
with her own mother.
At this time, she’s focused on
putting her integrative personal
philosophy into written form,
most especially with her
granddaughters and the future in
mind. Nikki is an astrloger and
artist.
