Before Deciding

When our representatives are making important decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask one basic question before making
those decisions,
Is this good for
the children?

Just imagine what our world would be like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz This show is dedicated to those ordinary women who are doing extraordinary things. To begin with joining me in the studio will be Marina Jurema and Becky Montgomery two of the organizers that coordinated in solidarity with the Women’s March the gathering yesterday in Courtyard Square in Downtown Santa Rosa on October 8. We will be talking about the Women’s March and the participation in our area.

Also Joining me in the studio is Jasmine Palmer from Athena House. Jasmine at one time was a resident and now is an advocate for Athena House and she was instrumental in finding a funding source to keep the Athena House program in operation. She will be giving us an update about the program.

Shout out to all those who participated on October 8 nationally and here in the Northbay for participating in the Women’s March. This is part of The Women’s Wave 2022; Women's rights are human rights! The march on Sat. October 8th was to make the statement loud and clear, WE DEMAND OUR RIGHTS and to support freedom for everyone, regardless of gender, to control our own bodies, our own choices, and our own lives.

Also, since October 8th marks 31 days until Election Day, they are more fired up than ever to elect more women and pro-choice candidates around the country and are ready for the Women’s Wave!

We celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day today.

Indigenous Peoples Day is a holiday in the United States that celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. On October 8, 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden became the first U.S. President to formally recognize the holiday, by signing a presidential proclamation declaring October 11, 2021, to be a national holiday. It is celebrated across the United States on the second Monday in October, and is an official city and state holiday in various localities. It began as a counter-celebration held on the same day as the U.S. federal holiday of Columbus Day, which honors Genovese-born explorer Christopher Columbus.

2. Our First Guests Marina Jurema and Becky Montgomery organized the Women's Wave rally in Santa Rosa that occurred last Saturday. Marina saw the call to action on the national Women's March website and she turned to her mentor Becky Montgomery for help. Marina and Becky met at an Indivisible meeting, where Becky volunteers to write postcards to mail to residents about a critical policy or candidate in their area facing a vote. Becky first felt moved to write postcards on hearing of the caged migrant children. Becky supported Marina by giving her an initial list of contacts to spread the word, and she showed up with Marina to the march called Women's Wave, where about hundred people showed with signs supporting Women's Rights over their own body.

About our Guest:  Marina Jurema is a 28-year-old woman born and raised in California. She has lived in Rohnert Park for a little over 3 years and currently works as a full-time caregiver. She has been invested in politics since I was about 15 or 16. Mariana recently started organizing and volunteering on a more serious level and is looking forward to getting more practice and experience.

About our Guest: Becky Montgomery was born in 1943, both her extended families lived in the Los Angeles Basin. When she was three years old, her father became an Air Force pilot, moving around a lot. She attended 22 schools. throughout her lifetime. She spent 8 1/2 years of her childhood in El Paso, TX, where she lived in the barrio for several months. Her parents were Republicans. When she was 14 her father was lost while tracking a hurricane.

3. Our Second Guest Jasmine Palmer joins us again. The first time was on June 20, 2022, when she announced the fund drive to save Athena House from closing its doors. She returns with the good news that a new service provider has been retained, along with a last-minute private donor, the Gallagher family, known developers in the county, who agreed to buy the lot with five buildings, renovate them, and provide affordable lease to Athena House for it continued operation. Jasmine had resigned from the Board of Directors of Athena House, as only the CEO by their bylaws was allowed to make fundraising efforts. Jasmine then set up a GoFundMe account and proceeded to get out the word, including her guest appearance on Women's Spaces Radio Show in June. Jasmine stresses how important these services are to women addicts, something she knows first-hand as a former meth addict. Sonoma County was #2 in the state in overdose deaths due to the opiate fentanyl. Jasmine was amazed how her taking a stand to save Athena House allowed her to experience so many good people and miracles in the process that at times seemed to be blocked by unsurmountable barriers.

About our Guest: Jasmine Palmer is an alumnus of Athena House and has stayed connected the past 10 years by volunteering, working as a counselor, and servng as a member of its board of directors.

For 20 years she been using meth and living the lifestyle that came along with it and on November 9, 2011, she was arrested, and fortunately some of her sentence was 6 months in treatment at Athena House. This is where she learned how to live. She passionately believes in Athena House and what it offers to women and is working hard to keep it open.

Jamine has worked in the field of drug and alcohol treatment over the past 10 years in different programs. For the past 3 years she has worked in the medical field doing care coordination with vulnerable populations, primarily homeless and formerly incarcerated individuals. She is a proud homeowner of a home she has personally helped build with the support of Habitat for Humanity. She is a single mom of two beautiful teenage girls, Emma, and Maya.

 Herstory

Our history is our strength. Check out important dates to remember in herstory at the National Women's History Alliance

National Women's History Alliance

Herstory Birthdays:

October 10, 1888 (1980) – Dorothy Ferebee, finally gained medical internship at Freedman’s Hospital despite rampant sexism, then built a 47-year association with Howard University hospital and the District of Columbia.

The founder of the Mississippi Health Project and the Southeast Neighborhood House, Dr. Dorothy Ferebee provided healthcare to the most vulnerable members of the African American community. She advocated for public health, civil rights, and women’s rights in her roles as president of the National Council of Negro Women, an international delegate for the U.S. government, and a pioneering obstetrician.
Despite her high marks in medical school, Ferebee struggled to find a residency position as the applications required a photograph and no white-run hospital would accept her due to her race. Finally, Freedmen’s Hospital, a Black-run hospital in Washington, D.C. that would later become part of Howard University, accepted her. In 1927, Ferebee was one of nine women to pass the District of Columbia medical exam. She then worked at Freedmen’s Hospital as an obstetrician, where she began promoting contraception and sex education for women, controversial topics at the time.

October 11, 1884 (1962) – Eleanor Roosevelt, civil rights advocate, feminist, author, world diplomat, former First Lady (1933-45)

October 12, 1908 (1997) – Ann Petry, reporter for African American newspapers in 1930s, wrote The Street, first African American novel to sell more than a million copies (1946)

The Street is a novel published in 1946 by African-American writer Ann Petry. Set in World War II era Harlem, it centers on the life of Lutie Johnson. Petry's novel is a commentary on the social injustices that confronted her character, Lutie Johnson, as a single black mother in this period. Junto represents Petry's deep disillusionment with the cultural myth of the American dream.
