Before Deciding

When our representatives are making important decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask one basic question before making
those decisions,
Is this good for
the children?

Just imagine what our world would be like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:

I have a special guest with me in the studio, Alicia Sanchez, President of our KBBF Board and she is going to give us an overview of a KBBF party for staff, producers, friends, and family which is happening on July 23 at Bayer Park. KBBF will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in August and she will let us know about the special fundraiser to celebrate 50 years on the air.

I have a special guest who will be joining me on the phone, Dotty E. LeMieux is founder of Green Dog Campaigns, and we will be talking about the upcoming election and the importance of women running for office and the steps needed to get there.

Bee on clover

July 10th is Don't Step on a Bee Day

In addition to being careful not to step on any bees, see how you can help save these crucial creatures from disease and other threats of distinction.

Don’t Step On A Bee Day is an important reminder that the fate of the common bee lies in the balance – with bee numbers in some countries reducing to only half in the last decade with no apparent cause, it’s vital that humans take care to maintain bee populations, pollination and honey production. And that’s exactly what Don’t Step On a Bee Day is all about!

2. Our guest Alicia Sanchez shares some of the history of the founding of Radio KBBF in Sonoma County, California. It began with students at Sonoma State University and Santa Rosa Junior College organizing for a community TV and radio station but opted for the radio station looking at the costs of operation. In 1971 the non-profit organization The Bilingual Broadcasting Foundation, Inc. (BBFI) was formed Ehel Kennedy meets with Guido del Prado of BBFI/KBBF in 1973in August. It received funding from the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation (see photo to the right of Ethel Kennedy meeting with Guido del Prado of BBFI/KBBF) which enabled the placement of the antenna on top of Mt. St. Helena. On May 31, 1973, Radio KBBF broadcast its first show at 89.1 FM. At the time it reached 18 counties, now it can be heard in Elaine B. Pine (now Holtz) at the studio of Radio KBBF producing her show Women's Spaces in 1978 .Sonoma County and 4 counties surrounding it. Elaine began producing her show Women's Spaces in 1978 in the Radio KBBF studio (see photo to the left).

On Sunday June 23, 2023,1 to 5 PM) at Bayer Park in Santa Rosa (Roseland),Radio KBBF is celebrating 50-years of broadcasting as the first fully bilingual, bicultural educational radio service in the United States. Entrance is free and open to the public. There will be music, food, children's activities, and bands. If you have an item for the raffle, contact Alicia. See the poster below under Guest Event. Also, save the date for the Gala Fundraiser for KBBF, which will be held on August 3rd, featuring CA State Senator Mike McGuire.

About our guest: Alicia Sanchez is the president of the BBFI/KBBF board of directors. She came to Santa Rosa in 1969 and became aware of a group of Chicano students who wanted to start a bilingual public radio station. Unfortunately, she was off to college and was not here when KBBF went on the air in 1973. She returned to Santa Rosa in 1986 and since then has played many roles with KBBF—listener, interviewee, election observer, and board member. Alicia has been a long time activist working on issues affecting workers, immigrants, women, and youth as well as an advocate for non-violence and social justice. Since 2010 she has been a full time volunteer with KBBF because of her love and passion for serving the community. She believes in KBBF’s vision and legacy.

3. Our guest Dotti E. LeMieux describes her path founding Green Dog Campaigns that helps progressive Democrats run for office. She was an activist in Marin County, CA and even ran for an elected office. She realized the need to share the practical aspects of campaigning with prospective candidates. She saw the need to counter the right-wing candidates of local offices, including school boards, as book banning increased since 2016 in many red states. Dotti finds women are well suited to be elected. Candidates need allies who will be team players. For those interested in running for an office, she suggests they attend meetings that the office holds. They must know the dates concerning the election, such as the registering to run date in their county or city. Money is needed to get the word out. Social media is not enough, as you need to reach those not on social media. Something to hold in your hand, like a card or direct mail, is needed. She mentions some resource websites, which we list below under the Reference Links.

About our guest: Dotti E. LeMieux is founder of Green Dog Campaigns (www.greendogcampaigns.com) and has successfully run campaigns for State, County and local office, specializing in progressive women. She serves on the Marin Democratic Central Committee and the State Central Committee and executive Boards. She was a Bernie Sanders delegate to the Democratic National Convention. And is a member of the Marin Women’s PAC. Dotty has authored numerous articles for political publications and trains candidates for office on behalf of many groups, such as Emerge California and the Marin Women’s PAC. She writes a blog with political tips, stories and sometimes satire called The Campaign Cookbook.  She tries to include actual recipes for the campaign trail.

 Herstory

Our history is our strength. Check out important dates to remember in herstory at the National Women's History Alliance,, where the date descriptions were sourced unless otherwise indicated.

National Women's History Alliance

Herstory's Event:

July 14, 1917 – 16 women from the National Women’s Party were arrested while picketing the White House demanding universal women’s suffrage; they were charged with obstructing traffic.

Herstory Birthdays:

July 19-20, 1848 – The Seneca Falls Convention, the country’s first women’s rights convention, is held in Seneca Falls, New York.

                           Women’s Rights Movement

The fight for women’s suffrage in the United States began with the women’s rights movement in the mid-nineteenth century. This reform effort encompassed a broad spectrum of goals before its leaders decided to focus first on securing the vote for women. Women’s suffrage leaders, however, disagreed over strategy and tactics: whether to seek the vote at the federal or state level, whether to offer petitions or pursue litigation, and whether to persuade lawmakers individually or to take to the streets. Both the women’s rights and suffrage movements provided political experience for many of the early women pioneers in Congress, but their internal divisions foreshadowed the persistent disagreements among women in Congress that emerged after the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment.

July 10, 1875 (1955) – Mary McLeod Bethune, educator, founder of the National Council of Negro Women, served as Minority Affairs Advisor to Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

July 13, 1910 (1983) – Josefina Niggli, playwright, moved to North Carolina from Mexico after penning prize-winning short stories; wrote first novel, Mexican Village, in 1945, later wrote television scripts including “The Twilight Zone.”

July 14, 1916 (1988) – Muriel Snowden, civil rights worker, co-founded Freedom House (1949) with her husband in Boston as a community organization to promote self-sufficiency and social justice.

July 15, 1899 (1990) – Estelle Ishigo, artist, joined her Japanese American husband in a Wyoming internment camp during WWII, made sketches of her experience for the War Relocation Authority, published “Lone Heart Mountain” in 1972 chronicling her internment.
